Gratitude (Shukr)
Training the heart to recognise Allahโs blessings, thank Him sincerely, and use His gifts in ways that please Him.
Gratitude, or shukr, is not only saying Alhamdulillah with the tongue. It is recognising blessings in the heart, praising Allah with words, and using His gifts in obedience. A grateful heart sees Allahโs mercy even in small moments.
The Journey of Gratitude (Shukr)
Gratitude begins when the heart realises that every blessing comes from Allah: our faith, health, family, food, safety, time and even the ability to worship Him.
True gratitude has three parts: recognising the blessing in the heart, praising Allah with the tongue, and using the blessing in a way that pleases Him.
A grateful believer does not only thank Allah during ease, but also remains aware of His wisdom during hardship.
Gratitude protects the heart from entitlement, jealousy and constant complaining. It teaches the soul to notice what Allah has already given instead of only focusing on what is missing.
Even small daily moments โ a meal, a quiet prayer, a kind word, a safe home, or another chance to return to Allah โ can become doors to shukr.
Reminder: Allah says, โIf you are grateful, I will surely increase you.โ โ Qurโan 14:7
Practical Steps Towards Gratitude
Say Alhamdulillah Often
Train your tongue to praise Allah throughout the day โ after eating, waking up, receiving good news or noticing a blessing.
Notice Small Blessings
Look for the quiet gifts around you: health, safety, family, food, guidance, time and the ability to make dua.
Use Blessings Correctly
Gratitude is shown by using what Allah gave you in ways that please Him, not in ways that lead the heart away from Him.
Write a Gratitude List
Take a moment each day to write three blessings Allah gave you. This softens the heart and reduces constant complaining.
Thank People Too
Part of gratitude is appreciating those through whom Allah sends goodness, while knowing that every blessing ultimately comes from Him.
Remember the Hereafter
Reflect that every blessing is a trust, and we will be asked how we used what Allah gave us.
