Patience (Sabr)

Strengthening the heart during hardship, delay, anger, emotional struggle and also happiness by trusting Allah and responding in a way that pleases Him.

Patience, or sabr, is one of the greatest qualities of the believer. It means holding the heart firm when life becomes difficult, controlling the tongue and actions, and trusting that Allah sees every struggle. True patience is not weakness, it is strength guided by faith.

Definition of Patience

The Journey of Patience (Sabr)

Patience is one of the most beloved qualities to Allah and one of the greatest sources of strength for a believer. Sabr does not mean feeling no pain or sadness; rather, it means remaining firm upon what pleases Allah when life becomes difficult. Whether we face loss, disappointment, delays, sickness, family struggles or personal hardships, patience helps the heart remain connected to Allah instead of becoming overwhelmed by despair.

Allah reminds us in the Qur'an: "Indeed, Allah is with the patient." (Qur'an 2:153) This is one of the greatest comforts a believer can have. During moments when nobody understands our struggles, Allah promises His special support, guidance and assistance to those who remain patient for His sake.

Patience is often tested most in the first moments of hardship. The Prophet ﷺ said: "Patience is at the first strike of calamity." (Sahih al-Bukhari and Sahih Muslim). True sabr is shown when we control our reaction, our words and our actions when difficulty first appears. It is easy to be patient after days or weeks have passed, but the believer strives to turn to Allah immediately when tested.

Allah also says: "And be patient, for indeed Allah does not allow the reward of the doers of good to be lost." (Qur'an 11:115). Every tear, every sacrifice, every struggle and every moment of restraint is known to Allah. Even when patience feels unnoticed by people, not a single act of sabr is ever wasted with Him.

The Prophet ﷺ further taught: "Whoever remains patient, Allah will make him patient." (Sahih al-Bukhari). Patience is not something people are simply born with; it is developed through practice. Every time a believer chooses faith over anger, trust over panic and dua over complaint, Allah strengthens their heart and increases them in patience.

One of the most beautiful promises regarding patience is found in Allah's words: "Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without measure." (Qur'an 39:10). While many deeds have known rewards, Allah speaks about the reward of patience without mentioning any limit. Scholars reflected that this indicates a reward so immense that only Allah truly knows its magnitude.

The Prophet ﷺ beautifully summarised the life of a believer when he said: "How wonderful is the affair of the believer! If something good happens, he is grateful, and that is good for him. If hardship befalls him, he is patient, and that is good for him." (Sahih Muslim). Through gratitude during ease and patience during hardship, every situation becomes a means of drawing closer to Allah.

Sabr is not simply waiting for hardship to pass. It is trusting Allah while you wait, obeying Him while you struggle, and believing that every test carries wisdom, mercy and reward beyond what you can currently see.

Practical Steps Towards Patience
The Journey of the Heart

Practical Steps Towards Patience

Pause Before Reacting

When something hurts or angers you, pause before speaking or acting. A moment of silence can protect the heart from regret.

Control the Tongue

Patience is shown through the tongue. Avoid words of despair, blame or complaint that pull the heart away from trust in Allah.

Make Dua Before Complaining

Turn to Allah first. Pour your sadness, fear and worry into dua before seeking comfort from people.

Trust Allah’s Timing

Delays are not always denial. Sometimes Allah is protecting, preparing or guiding you to something better.

Stay Firm in Salah

Salah gives the heart strength. When life feels heavy, return to prayer and seek help through patience and salah.

Remember the Reward

No pain carried with faith is wasted. Allah rewards the patient beyond what they can imagine.
